Recoding a prepaid meter is not difficult, since you can complete the process from your comfort zone without endless stress. However, before you can recode your prepaid meter online, you will need a key change token (KCT). With the KCT, you will be able to recode your prepaid meter seamlessly.
Requirements for Recoding Prepaid Meter
For you to successfully recode your prepaid meter, you must have the following:
- Key change token one (KCT 1)
- Key change token two (KCT 2)
- Prepaid electricity token
- Active meter CIU

- You can get your KCT (1 & 2) when you purchase a prepaid token online.
- The KCT is always 20 digits in number, just like your prepaid tokens.
How to Recode Prepaid Meter Online
If you want to recode your prepaid meter online, do this:
- Purchase a prepaid electricity token online so that you will be able to get your key change tokens alongside your 20-digit token.
- Input the first 20 digits of your recode token (KCT 1) and wait for a while for it to be accepted
- Next, input the second 20-digit token (KCT 2) into your CIU and wait for it to be accepted.
- Lastly, input your 20-digit prepaid token and press the “ENTER” button, and your prepaid meter will be recoded instantly.

All the prepaid electricity tokens bought in advance will not work after your meter has been recoded. This means that if you buy any prepaid token, ensure that you load it before recording your meter; hence, it is best to load all your prepaid tokens once you buy them.
How do you recode your Eskom prepaid meter?
You can recode your Eskom prepaid meter by entering the key change tokens (KCT 1 & 2) into your meter CIU and afterward inputting the prepaid tokens and clicking on the “ENTER” button, and your meter will be recoded automatically.
