Error 30 on Prepaid Meter: Meaning, Causes, and How to Fix it

Sometimes, as a prepaid meter user, you may encounter issues when using your meter, and one such issue is error 30

Although there are a number of issues that may cause your prepaid meter to display error 30, the most common one is when the keypad (CIU) is no longer communicating with the meter outside. 

However, error 30 on a prepaid meter can be fixed through different measures like unplugging the CIU and replugging it into a different socket that is closer to the meter itself and replugging your CIU battery, among other effective measures. 

Meaning of Error 30 on Prepaid Meter

Error 30 on a prepaid meter simply means that there are communication issues between the meter’s customer interface unit (CIU) and the meter itself. This simply means that your meter keypad is not able to send or receive information from the meter box outside. When this happens, you won’t be able to load prepaid meter units into your meter, because error 30 will be displaying on the meter’s keypad.

Causes Error 30 on Prepaid Meter

There are many factors that cause error 30 on prepaid meters. Some of these cause are

1. Electric Power Line Interference

When fluorescent lights, electrical appliances, or other home appliances are plugged into the same socket or circuit as the meter keypad, it may disrupt communication between the CIU and the meter.

2. Weak Keypad Batteries

Since most CIU uses batteries, if the keypad battery is weak, the CIU may not be able to communicate with the meter since it need strong battery to maintain communication

3. Faulty Electrical Connection

When the electrical wiring in your property is loose or faulty, it may also cause error 30 because the information between the meter and the CIU may not be effective again.

4. Outdated or Expired Software

Prepaid meters run with software; once this software has issues, the CIU may not communicate effectively with the meter box outside, leading to error 30.

How to fix error 30 on prepaid meter

There are different ways to fix error 30 on a prepaid meter. They include but are not limited to:

  • Systematically unplugging of all your home appliances to see if they are interfering with the CIU, especially if they are in the same circuit with the meter keypad
  • Plugging of the the meter’s CIU into a new a socket that is closer to the meter box outside
  • Replacing your CIU battery with new ones, especially if it is weak
  • If none of the above measures worked, then you will need to contact your electricity provider for assistance. 

Conclusion

Error 30 on the prepaid meter is due to a communication problem between the customer interface unit and the meter itself. It is caused by a weak battery in the CIU, electric power line interference, faulty electrical connection, outdated firmware, etc. It can be fixed by systematically removing home appliances and replacing the CIU into a new socket closer to the meter box outside. Don’t forget to replace your CIU battery if it is weak, and most importantly, if none of these measures worked for you, then you should contact your electricity provider for help.
